The Impact of a Bathroom on Selling your Home

Home » Blog » The Impact of a Bathroom on Selling your Home

You might not think it’s the most important room in the house and you’re probably right, but that doesn’t mean that the state of your bathroom in a property isn’t a deal clincher. Having an outdated and ill-equipped bathroom can but lots of buyers off, because it can take considerable cost to bring it up to scratch and into the 21st century.

There’s nothing worse than a rubbish shower with bad water pressure or you might just have a bath and no shower – this won’t cut it in the modern market, your bathroom needs to look nice and have good fixtures and fittings.

Deep Clean

Before you sell, you need to give your bathroom an almighty clean. Deep clean everything because there’s nothing worse than the impression that a dirty, unclean bathroom gives to buyers. It looks unhygienic and there could be things that create problems for them further down the line, such as mould or limescale. Keep everything spotless – clean your shower heads, plugholes, taps, buyers will notice every speck of dust and dirt.

Freshen up your towels, get a new toilet seat if you need one and make sure everything is sparkling.

Declutter your bathroom too and don’t have a whole host of random bath products floating around as it’ll look too busy and won’t show off the space or storage you have on offer.

Walls

It’s a good idea to put lots of mirrors in your bathroom as it reflects light and makes a space look bigger. It also makes a bathroom more interesting if you’ve got a drab colour scheme. Update your bathroom walls with a lick of paint to make it bright and vibrant, clean tiles or replace them if they’re looking tired and make sure you don’t have any peeling wallpaper or paint. Neutral and light colours are recommended for bathrooms because it appeals to more people, instead of having an unconventional colour scheme that will put people off or force them to have to immediately update a bathroom if they buy and move in.

Showers

When showing your property to potential buyers, don’t hide your shower with a curtain, as this will make a bathroom look less spacious and more cluttered. If you have a decent shower then show it off to buyers too, demonstrate how powerful it is and how easy to use, as this is one of those little things that actually makes a big different to people’s lives – a bad shower is bad news. Not having a powerful shower with good water pressure can be a big disadvantage, so if you can get someone in to improve it before you start viewings, it’s a good idea and could make a big difference.

Likewise, if you don’t actually have a shower and just a bath, it’s worth looking at investing in one, because lots of buyers will be put off by the lack of options on show.
